WELCOME TO THE CHARTERHOUSE GROUP OF THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITIES 2009

Welcome to the Homepage of The Charterhouse Group of Therapeutic Communities. We recognise that 2009 will be a year of change for The Charterhouse Group and that the work in developing a single voice for Therapeutic Communities and environments is a challenge. Infact, the work of the Joint Association Working Group (JAWG) has moved forward and elect members have been put forward for the first Council format. Also, The Directors Forum has been re-established and becomes the main focus of developemnt wrk this year.

We continue to develop our network of member organisations and foster links with other like minded groups. In the following pages you will be able to see who the member organisations are and read about their work.

A strategic plan formulated in June 2007 was accepted in the 2007 AGM and the work to develop The Council of Therapeutic Communities has gone forward with the help of ATC and PETT and the financial encouragement of `The Tudor Trust. The Charterhouse Group of Therapeutic Communities is committed to developing a cohesive and focussed approach to Standards of Care and Education.

Please contact Patrick Webb if you require more information.

At our EGM held in Birmingham on 30th January,2009, the following persons were duly elected unanimously as the new Trustees: P.Pritz,K.Gallagher,A.Meaney,M.Donovan,C.Nicholson,J.Baker,H.Ward. Following this Kevin Gallagher was elected as our new Chairperson. The new Treasurer is Pat Pritz and our the Secretary for new membership is Hilary Ward. Richard Rollinson (outgoing Chairperson) noted his gratitude for having had the opportunity to serve Chaarterhouse and hoped and believed it will develop from strength to strength as we become part of a new combined world of therapeutic organisations with the inaugural meeting of The Council of Therapeutic Communities in March 2009. He thanked outgoing Trustees for their much valued work and in handing on the chair to Kevin Gallagher wished the new team well.

The new Trustees have heeded the discussion in the EGM and have paved the way for a Professional Advisory Group of which the first members will be Richard Rollinson,Christine Bradley and Philip Stokoe should they all agree to serve.

The Charterhouse Group of Therapeutic Communities is a professional network of member organisations who provide specialist treatment, through therapeutic care and education, to severely emotionally troubled and damaged children, young people and their carers. The Charterhouse Group has pioneered the development of standards for therapeutic environments, specialising in the work centred on children and young people.

Local Authorities referring children and young people through The Charterhouse Group of Therapeutic Communities do so in the knowledge that the highest standards are sought from member organisations in the treatment of young persons who are admitted to member organisation establishments.

Charterhouse Group highlights the needs of these often forgotten and poorly understood children through promoting, supporting and informing the development of specialist care, treatment and education provision at national and international levels.

We are partners in the ‘Community of Communities’ standards development research in conjunction with The Royal College of Psychiatrists Research Unit and the Association of Therapeutic Communities. Training is an integral part of the work and is available to professionals who are interested in developing their skills and understanding of therapeutic intervention. Above all, the Charterhouse group of therapeutic communities is engaged in promoting and developing the best in therapeutic care and education influencing the national debate on provision and practice. To this end we provide a unique service for our members in the UK and Ireland and through our international links with similar organisations. Further we have developed working links with Local Authorities and have been engaged in developing policy initiatives with the DSCF through for example, The National Residential Contract.
