Services - What we do
1) Practice and Support Network Senior operational staff from each of our member organisations meet together quarterly to share practice, support, to discuss sector issues and the network. Operating specialist settings within the modern social care context requires a higher degree of attention to detail and ongoing scrutiny. As in any professional discipline sharing developments with other expert colleagues is essential.
2) Continuing Professional Development Every quarter we provide a professional development opportunity for our members. A trainer or guest speaker presents materials or papers to help apply different theoretical concepts to our work. Alternatively, this may involve a more practical workshop event. Charterhouse is committed to ongoing learning and enquiry.
3) Sector Representation Charterhouse is a recognised “voice” within the social care sector, we have strong and established links with the National Centre for Excellence in residential childcare (NCERCC) are invited to take part in various sector consultations, are involved in major projects and pilots such as social pedagogy pilot study and also have excellent working links with Community Care magazine and Children and Young People Now magazine.
4) Professional Advisory Group Created in 2009 Charterhouse is privileged to have access to an advisory group made up of a wide range of pioneering and highly experienced professionals from across the therapeutic childcare sector. Should any of our members (or local authorities) have a very specific issue, court processes for a young person, serious case reviews, support with regulation, consultation, development or other specific area of need then we can identify a highly skilled individual to provide support, advice or guidance.
5) Stakeholder Representation Charterhouse is a stakeholder and represents therapeutic childcare for its members in a number of important sector initiatives:-
a) NCERCC – A Charterhouse member has a place on the programme board for NCERCC to keep our members fully involved in the very latest practice development and representation across residential childcare.
b) Community of Communities – A Charterhouse member sits on the Children and Young People’s reference group at the Community of Communities to support the development of accredited practice within the Royal College of Psychiatry and to support the annual review cycle.
c) Social Pedagogy Pilot Programme – Charterhouse assisted in the recruitment of the residential childcare organisations to be involved in this important research and individual member organisations are involved in the study itself.
d) Workforce Development – Charterhouse have sponsored and supported the working conference (October 2009) at the Tavistock Clinic focusing with other stakeholders on the future workforce development for this specialised area of work.
e) The Council of Therapeutic Communities (TCTC) – Charterhouse is working closely with the Association of Therapeutic Communites (ATC) and other sector stakeholders to create a single council to oversee and represent therapeutic care in the UK. It is anticipated that this single body will come into force in 2011.
